Default Canon 5d Mark II problem (piece fell out!!)

Hello I need some help. A friend of mine opened my camera to change lenses and this plastic piece just fell out. I'm not sure whether he turned the camera off before he opened it, but regardless I'm pretty sure this shouldn't happen.

The plastic seems to be intact

.

Also the there a metal piece that looks like the frame for the plastic that seems to be a bit loose.

Is the plastic piece only there to protect the mirror? How worried should I be on a scale from one to ten? I am still covered under warranty and I know I'm going to have to send it in for repairs but I am currently doing a video shoot in the Dominican Republic, and sending it back to the USA at the moment would be a real hassle. Would it be a technically complicated repair and should I risk fixing it here at a shop? I dared to try checking it in LiveView and it seems to work, would I be crazy if I ignored it and keep shooting for a while?

I'm kind of freaking out because I don't know anything about this, any advice would be much appreciated.

Ricky

No worries. That's just the focus screen. It's what you're looking through when you peer through the viewfinder. It should be up against the top of the camera. The "door" that holds it into place probably just came unlatched.

It's mean to be interchangeable. As long as the latch on the "door" holding it in place didn't break, you should be fine. Just try not to touch the focus screen anywhere but on the edges--it's very easily scratched. Here's a video of how the focus screens are changeable on a 40D:

If the focus screen has been damaged, you can easily buy a replacement. If the door is broken, then you'll need to send the camera to Canon Service.

My immediate reaction was pretty much that "Oh look, a nice focusing screen to re-install/play with "

I get it all the time at work with students and teenagers coming in with old film SLRs... See alot of Canon and Nikon coming in with the little holders that have come loose when the lens is first taken off after years or the first shutter actuation in years. We just clean the focusing screen with a microfibre, slide it back in and push the latch closed.
