Glass before bodies, since by the time you'll have learned enough to need the features in the higher-tiered body, chances are good you'll be upgrading anyways because of sensor improvements. Although, I'm not sure why you'd be choosing between a 30D and a 50D. If you can afford a 50D, I'd say you might also want to look at the 40D or the T1i/500D, as they'd be much better feature-wise than the 30D.

Yes, the 50D can do portraits and weddings, but so can the 40D (and 30D). And whether you can shoot portraits/weddings depends as much (or more) on your secondary gear: having fast lenses with wide max. apertures (and external flash gear) may be more important than having the incremental upgrades the 50D has over the older models. If you're new to SLRs, you have to get over the thinking that the camera body is the most important purchase and everything else is an accessory. With SLR photography, your bodies, lenses, and other equipment make up a system as a whole and you're likely to spend more on lenses than on bodies. And the camera bodies are probably the most disposable/upgradeable portion of that system, since it's now computer equipment and you're likely to upgrade within three to five years. |

I have just gone to the 50D and am EXTREMELY happy. A big step up from the 350-500D series.
Look for refurb bodies at Adorama, I saved a heap through there, Added a 50mm prime 1.8 , 17-40L and 70-200L. The combo is a massive leap from my 350D and series of cheaper zoom lenses |
