Default Canon 5D mk II or 7D

I currently have a Canon 400D, which I was considering upgrading to the Canon 5D mk II until the Canon 7D came out.

What do I need to consider when choosing between these two cameras?

What are the benefits of full frame?

benefits are EF lens are not multiplied by crop factor, and image ratio is true 35mm shape, also can use fisheyes properly on FF but cant on crop. FF cameras tend to have 'better' features like more MP, better AF, more buffer, faster write, more focus points etc - but this more tha fact they are aimed at pro's rather than being FF.

the canon 7D is not fullframe, but is the latest crop body, so more likely to have features which the ff cameras have (apart from the FF part)

Hi
I am quite varied in what I take, ranging from wildlife, sports, portraits, landscapes, flowers, etc.

The 7D is better for action photography and having the crop factor, so it's more your sports/wildlife camera. The 5DMkII is better on high resolution and noise performance, but not so good at the action, so it's more your portrait and landscape camera.

That's not to say that the 7D can't shoot landscapes or portraits, or the 5DMkII can't do action, but they're tools that are more optimized for specific tasks. Which matters the most to you, or the budget you can spend on a camera, should determine which one you get.

LOL @ 5D2 AF.

There's a pretty big price difference between the two, would you just bank the money saved or buy glass?

If you want a 8FPS then you would go 7D. It's also cheaper than the 5D Mk II.
We did a stress test of the 7D burst mode a couple day ago. You might want to watch it here:
YouTube - Canon 7D 20 second Burst Test

Although Canon has numbered its last camera 7D it's considered within the two digit range (i.e. 40D, 50D).

Personally I find it's a quite good and versatile camera if you go from a 400D. You can basically do everything you want with the P mode. We tested the Canon 7D when it arrived last week and were quite impressed by the new autofocus and metering system.

We also use two 5D Mk II but it's more for pro works.

If the crop factor doesn't bother you, then I would recommend to go with 7D. It's a 18 Mega pixel, you have plenty of room for enlargements.

Hope this helps

Vince
