That is the one thing holding me back. The 18-50 2.8 Sigma is pretty attractive, but it doesnt have the HSM for canon mounts.
the canon 18-55 F2.8 is ideal, just to expensive. I am saving for a serious telephoto lens |

If you have not thought of it...I to was trying to find a nice wide angle lens from canan in a f2.8 that covers a nice range. But I could find what I wanted in the canon line. What I went with was the Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX . I have found it to be a great lens and it has had great reviews. This is one lens that offtens get over look.

I own the 17-55 2.8 and 10-22, both are absolutely fantastic (and not-cheap) lenses. I think the question you should ask is whether you will go full frame any time soon. I went APS-C and cannot just casually upgrade to FF now. That's not really an issue for me at this point. I may just go 7D (or 7DII or whatever is TOTL in APS-C when I do upgrade). If you're not shooting architecture, the 17-55 should do everything you need for walkaround. If you shoot enough architecture, you really should pick up the 10-22 for your next glass.
My recommendation...17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. Worth every penny. |

I love my 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. But, I wouldn't call it a wide angle lens. It's the normal 35mm with some space to zoom in and out, but that's it. If you want wide angle, definitely check out Canon's 10-22mm, it's awesome. The image quality of both lenses are very good, and as FormElement said worth every penny.

Congratulations on the new L glass.
I armed myself with a new 17-40L last week too for use at a wedding, which was held outdoors in a rainforest and called for something a bit wider than the 24mm of the 24-70 gives me. I stuck with it all day - what a great lens - sharp (I expected nothing less from an L) and just the right length to use as my walk-around in a fairly cramped reception, get the wide shots of couple and tree canopy plus some fabulous sunset landscapes. I'm restricting myself to the 17-40 for the next two weeks to really get to know it. I trust you've had the same great experiences!
