Although, honestly, I've seen the OM-mount Olympus Zuiko 50 f/1.8 go for $10 used, and it's smaller than the Nikon lens, almost a pancake.

My first DSLR that I just got a month ago was the Canon 40D, as my first lens I got the 50mm f/1.8 after using the same lens for a few months on a borrowed Nikon D80, I love that lens its great! And till I am able to aford something else that lens is just fine for me.

Here's a shot I took at a concert with it a couple of weeks after I got it: ![]() On the plus side, it's light, nice and sharp, and inexpensive. On the down side, it's made mostly of plastic (hence the lightness) and it felt flimsy even before it was broken. I'm replacing mine with the f/1.4, but that's out of the price range you specified.

I'd suggest the 50mm f/1.8.
If you can afford it then I'd look at Tokina lens. I've got the 50-135mm f/2.8 and it's pretty damn sharp but it's out of your price range that you stated.
