I have the Canon 100mm f/2.8 and it is an excellent macro lens. It is sharp, especially when stopped down a bit, and also works well as a close portrait lens.

I haven't personally tried the other lenses you mentioned, but I've heard better reports about the Sigma than the Tamron.

I'm with Sara, love my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. In fact, I used it quite a bit this last weekend in my home studio -- first shooting portraits, which came out nice with excellent boquet. Then the next day doing some still lifes both from a distance and extremely closeup.

The Canon 100 is a very versitile lens as you can see from the usage over the weekend. Also, the glass is very sharp -- it really should probably be an L lens but then the price would probably be higher. Just consider it a bargain L lens, it is that good.

L lenses are canon's "luxury" line. Theyre better in build quality and optical quality. They also generally have faster maximum apertures (constant f/2.8, usually) and are designed to take more of a beating. They're PRO lenses.

They also demand a PRO pricetag.

(just for the record, please dont spell words "cld". Spell it out "could" like normal)

(As mentionned in my prior post: type properly. "could" is spelled with vowels.)

A "professional" lens is, as I've mentionned, optically better than "consumer" lenses. The glass is better, as are the coatings used on the lens elements. The L lenses are also generally f/2.8 constant max apertures, instead of variable aperture jobs. Theyre also built much better and can take a beating.

I've written this already: just read.

A coworker actually just let me borrow his Canon 100mm F2.8 today. I can't wait to try her out over the weekend. I think the build quaily is nice on this lens, I can't speak of the optics yet but I imagine them to be very good as well from everything I have read.
