Hello,
I´m thinking seriously in an upgrade, currently I have an XTi (for my teenager) and a 20D with some extras. Does anyone know about a reliable site for some price comparisons? 50D users, is it really cool? What are the main differences with a 40D? Thanks in advance.

I just sold my Canon XS and bought the 40D. I based this on many reviews. Ultimatly, I didn't think that the extra $500 for the 50D was worth it so I went with the 40D. You will find in most reviews that some of the main differences are the LCD resolution is better in the 50D and they crammed 5 million more pixels into the 50D bumping it to 15 from the 40D's 10 which ultimatly leads to slightly higher high ISO noise due to a higher pixel density. You might need that extra 5 million pixels if you want to print something freaking HUGE but the 40D has enought resolution to print 13x19" prints with ease.
Another big difference is you will start to experience diffraction (immage getting softer rather than sharper) starting at f/7.6 vs. the 40D's f/9.3. What this means is that you will start to loose image quality when you use aperatures higher than those figures. There are other differences between the two but you will have to determine if they are worth $500 dollars or not. I went with the 40D body only and then sold 3 of my lenses and bought a canon 17-55 2.8 IS USM. Check out http://www.cameralabs.com for more in-depth review.
Many reviews stated that you'll need higher lenses to get more of the 50D... while 40D is going cheaper and you can get good deal on it. Keep in mind that 50D is in no way replacement for the 40D.

Sime did a review right here on DPS with the 50D. I don't know how to link to it, but you can probably find it with the search. I've owned one for a couple of weeks now, and I couldn't be happier.

dpreview's laid out all the 40D/50D differences here.
The main differences are the larger higher-resolution LCD display on the back, the ability to micro-adjust the focus on your lenses, and a higher-resolution sensor with higher iso settings. The Canon XXD forum on dpreview.com is also a good place to get reactions from 50D owners. From what I gather, most 50D owners are happy with their purchases, while a lot of 40D owners tend to remain smug about theirs. Phil Askey's 50D review on dpreview has caused not a little controversy both on conclusions and methodology, but in the end, both of the bodies were rated as "highly recommended". The 40D's image quality "superiorities" to the 50D are at a per-pixel level. The 50D has more pixels, which makes it very difficult to be comparing apples to apples. Everybody tends to interpret these facts together in different ways, and which way, more often than not, seems to depend on which camera the person bought. Also, there was some controversy about how the RAW files were processed--the beta version of ACR that was initially used apparently exacerbated the 'banding' issue with high-iso noise, while Canon's own DPP software seemed to eliminate it. There are tons of people throwing around a lot of useless argument and namecalling on dpreview, just so you're forewarned before you dive in. I'd highly highly HIGHLY recommend not posting a "which is better, the 40D or 50d?" thread there. Everyone's pretty damn sick of it, and they're to the point where they're posting parody threads of the trolling. Use the search. Really. The general feeling is that if you have a 40D, it's probably not worth it to upgrade to a 50D. If you have an earlier camera or are on a lower tier, upgrading to the 50D, if you can afford it, is probably a good move. New the 40D body is $900 on Amazon, and can be found in the neighborhood of $700 used. The 50D body is a little less than $1200, and very very tough to find used. So, if you're on a shoestring budget, and bang for the buck is your overriding concern, then a used 40D is probably your best bet. If, however, you're a feature-creature with a bit of spare money, then the 50D is probably your best bet. For price comparisons, B&H, Adorama, and Amazon are good places to start. KEH.com is good for used prices.

I have the 40D and the 50D so I feel I can be objective about this issue. The 40D is a very good camera especially at todays prices . You can get very good results with this camera. The 50D however is a better camera especially if you want more detail in your photos and also if you shoot things that move. The 50D focusing system while using the same nine points as the 40D has the digic 4 processor and it is substantially faster to lock focus. My keeper rate on action shots has gone way up since I got the 50D particularly in Servo. I noticed this particularly on my long lenses. The 40D focus in Servo just wouldn't keep up while the 50D locks on very quickly. Noise is about the same and considering that you have five more megapixels then the 40D that is remarkable. Don't underexpose and you won't have a noise problem. Most of the negative reviews I have seen in forums come from people who don't own the 50D. Don't get sucked in. If you have the money for a 50D get one, you will never regret it.

I also am looking at purchasing a canon DSLR, have looked at 450d and 50d. The price difference is a draw back for seemingly little better end result. The 50d however is beautiful to hold and use, feels far more professional also. Can any one help me decide,?Also need advice on lenses a great all-rounder to start as i can only afford 1.

Hi guys, from the look of things the 40D vs. 50D battle rages on. I'm really interested in these posts mainly because I am planning to upgrade my dslr (canon 30D). I actually in a hunt for a good deal on a pre-owned 5D coz I really want to crossover to full frames. Unfortunately, most 5D's I've looked at are in bad shape. With my budget on hand, I am considering getting the next gen of what I own now. Between the 40D and the 50D, I am convinced to get the 50D.
My dilemma now is, should I get the 50D or should I wait and save for the 5D Mark II? Which can be quite a while by the way. It's just that I can't wait to get my hands on a new system especially with the DIGIC 4 but I also want to go full frame. On a "happy meter" of 1 to 10, will the upgrade in the 50D be enough for me to postpone my full frame fantasy? Thanks |

Inkista: Would a re-sized image from a 50D show less noise than an SOOC camera from a 40D?
If one were to take the same picture, with the same settings and same lens but just different bodies, and re-size (not crop) the larger image to the smaller one's size, would that work? |
