Depends on who you ask. Personally, I think it's too close to call. I've actually seen one side-by-side where someone resized both the 40D and the 50D images to try and get parity: they grew the 40D image and shrank the 50D image so they met at a halfway point. To my eye, the 40D looked worse, but I was probably fixated on resolution not noise performance; I've always been a resolution-junkie and not much of a noise-worrier (I shot film, remember--there wasn't much you could do about grain, and iso was fixed to the roll.)

For me, FF is my only goal. You should get the 50D if only you need an upgrade now. Between the 5D and 5D2, I can said that 5D2 can be my final Canon DSLR. I don't mean it is that good, but it is adequate enough (excluding fast actions of course).

BTW, there is no magic in FF. There is always MF and LF.
