This is a complex way of doing something very very simple. There are tons of standalone software packages that list the total shutter activation count in plain english from a raw file.

The original post was made 12-20-2006 so maybe back then there weren't too many programs for that?

Most of the ones I've seen (including SEVERAL that are online-only) have been around since at least then.

This is a nice way to feel out when you need a new camera. My 20d's shutter is rated for 100,000.... As of July 5th I was at 25,935, but I shot a wedding and 2 photo shoots since then. I bet it around 27,000 i will find out tonight when I look at a new raw file when I get home from work.

Note: If you see two sets of Numbers @ 95D+95E don't assume it's that the actuations has it's in HEXADECIMAL and has to be converted to DECIMAL!! CONVERT!

Also I do not know how to do this on other cameras besides the 20D, 30D.
I assume it's on the EOS Series cameras. Not sure about any other.

my results

Default I do not think the original post dated 2006 correct

With all due respect to Bail, like NDMT, not sure I'm sold on the method he posted in 2006 which started this discussion.

I have tried the method with both my 2 cameras: 30D and 50D. Both are way off.

For 30D, I took 4 pictures in Raw format. All come out with exactly identical numbers for shutter actuation. I tried a JPG for the fifth pic. Same number as the previous 4. Does it mean the shutter actuation therefore will never change again for my Canon 30D? Something just does not add up.

I tried 50D, which I just bought brand new for about 3 months. It showed me results similar to what I described above. It showed a shutter actuation of 18,750. Well, have I been taking an average of about 200 pics a day since the day of purchase? Absolutely not. Otherwise, my beautiful wife might have already accompanied me to a shrink. Was this Camera brand new? You bet. I am the first owner.

The better program to use is EOSInfo. My 50D shutter actuation came out 1757. Right on. However, EOSInfo could not display anything before DigicIII. Too bad, my 30D will remain in dark.

Daniel

Here is another way to get the actuation count for any camera provided it can shoot RAW.

In Photoshop (Mac or Windows) open the last file taken. Select “Info” from the drop down “File menu.” Click on “Advanced” expand, Click on 4th item “Aux Image Number.” That will show the actuation count as of the last image.
