Question Buying first D-SLR - what are some recommendations?

I'm looking at buying my first D-SLR camera. Right now I use a Cannon Powershot sx100IS, which I love. Photography is becoming a major hobby. I take mostly landscape pictures (a lot of sunsets!!), but I also take pictures of the family, the dog & around the farm.

I would like a D-SLR that I can grow into & use for years to come. I have never used a D-SLR before, but I have no problem playing around with a camera 'til I can get it figured out. Since going digital I have always used Cannon, so I would like to stick with that.

Any recommendations & suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

What kind of budget do you have? The entire line of Canon DSLRs are great, but it all comes down to how much money you have to spend.

The Canon Rebel line is a great place to start or even the 7D (step above the Rebels) but a bit more pricy. The T3i, kit lens 18-55mm, the 55-250mm sister lens and a 430EXII flash would be a great starter in to the DSLR world. As stated it depends on budget. This set-up new would run around $1500 - $2000 range.

Just FYI, my "a dSLR is not a P&S upgrade lecture."

I'd also advocate taking a few minutes to contemplate whether a dSLR or a mirrorless compact system is a better fit for you. There's a reason these mirrorless sytems are busting out all over. Of course, I'm coming off the high of grabbing a Panasonic G3 for $450, used.

Actually, the 7D is two steps up from the Rebels. The 60D is the next step up.

I would like to keep it under $1500, but if there is something better for a little more $, I could make it work.

With that budget, then you should stay with the Rebel line of cameras. Either the 550D/T2i or 600D/T3i. Then you would have more to spend on glass.

Probably the T2i. Snapsort is a good place to get an idea when comparing cameras.

I just bought the Rebel T3 kit before Christmas and love it but I found that after a while I just wanted that bit more and thanks to my wife browsing QVC one night they had a Canon 60D kit on special offer which I got and I love it too. The T3 for the price is a great camera and would recommend it for the price if you can squeeze a few more $$$ then I'd go 60D.
