Default T3i vs sont a55

just purchesed a used XSi two months ago which was my first slr now I'm looking to upgrade. The guy at the local camera shop is realy pushing this sony over the nokon and the cannon. His selling points are the speed and the video and panoramic. I have a very fast moving dog who i love taking pictures of and motorsports so the speed was a good option in my head. The closesest cannon for speed seams to be the 7D but thats at least another 500 clams. any advise?

For sport and action I would not be looking at the a55, mainly because of the problems when shooting a 6 or 10fps with the viewfinder especially when panning), the slow recovery time,. and more seriously the autofocus issues when used at these speeds.

See page 8 on this review.

I shoot motor sport with a Canon 40D and have friends who have 7Ds and love it.

The guy at the local camera shop is probably getting a nice bonus we call SPIFFs. They're bonuses offered by manufacturers for selling particular models. They used to be the norm (everybody offered them) for the longest time, but in late 2009/early 2010, they disappeared and only came up every now and then. Sony is actually one of the less common culprits, but generally offers more when it does.

What this means is that the employee might get a bonus for selling you a Sony over a Canon. It's not really all that right but it happens. If you'd like to learn more, PM me.

You have a Canon camera now: What about it dont you like? What do you like? More importantly: Why on earth would you change if you already have other gear (lenses, etc) for that particular brand?

i love cannon, ive had 4 point and shoots a S3 now the XSi and they all still work! but without being able to "test drive" the competition I'm not sure about my next choice. I should consider the 7D and save up a few more bucks and just get that.

How is the video quality (ie focus, zoom...) on the 7d?

Uh, those are both LENS dependent.
