Default T3i newbie question

Hi,

I'm interested in getting a T3i as my first DSLR. I've been doing quite a bit of research and my only real concern is that it does not have image stabilization. I'm not quite sure what that means however. From what I understand about my P&S, image stabilization means that even if I have a shaky hand, my photos will come out sharp, rather than blurry.

Does having no image stabilization in a T3i mean that I will have to shoot mostly with a tripod or have a super steady hand?

Sorry if this is a dumb question... I'm VERY new to the DSLR and photography world!

I have the T31 or 600D and it does have image stabilisation. It's a great camera in my books!!

Not correct

ALL Canon and Nikon DSLR's have the IS in the lens system, not the body. Some lenses have, some don't. The kit lens does.

This allows IS to be designed for specific products, rather than having a generic body IS.

Image stabilization in Canon DSLRs (and Nikons too) is lens based. Nearly all kits lenses, if not all now, have IS (Image Stabilization).

oops, just noticed gturner beat me to this...

However, I will say that IS lenses will, or should allow you to take sharper pictures if you are somewhat shaky or if you are using slow shutter speeds, then if you didn't have IS. Note that it is still quite possible to take very fuzzy pictures with IS though - it doesn't solve everything.

Oops - yes my bad! I have two kit lenses with image stabilisation, and the 50 f/1.8 without. Very sorry. I still think it's a great camera though, and I use a tripod most of the time with it.
