Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a new camera. ive been working with a 450D for a few years now and I want to finally upgrade as I have now reached the ceiling of what this camera can do for me I am stuck between getting the 5d and the 7d. I really don’t know what to choose as everyone tells me to go for the 5d for the full frame, but then others say that the 5d has focusing issues. Please help! Ps. Apologies in full if there is a similar thread about this on the forum.. I just cant find it. Also I have to go to work right now.

Sorry about that!
Most of my shooting involves nature and people photography. I'd like to get into studio photography when I can though. I'm really looking to purchase a future proof camera. I don't want to be disappointed later on if the camera is superseded dramatically. The lens I currently use are just the standard kit lens that come with entry level canons.. (18-55 and 55-200) I know that I won't be able to use these lens on the 5d. I'll be purchasing either other cameras in a kit.

Are the nature subjects moving, like birds in flight?

I don't know if there currently is such a thing as a "future proof" (digital) camera.
Is there any particular reason why you aiming at the 7d or 5d instead of a newer Rebel or the 60d? Edit: I just missed the last two posts while I was writing this one. I agree with Richard. I was in the same situation as you; 450d wanting to upgrade, couldn't decide between 7d and 5dII. I went with the 7d because I shoot a lot of action. If I were primarily into landscape or portraiture, I would have gone with the 5dII. As you are already aware though, either camera is much more demanding in terms of optical quality of the lenses, you will definitely want/need to get better lenses. The 5d of course will be a must as has already been mentioned since it will not accept EF-S glass. Last edited by mrteacherdude; 12-07-2011 at 05:46 AM. |

Good info guys!
I'm very keen for the 5d. But the fact that I've been told about the focusing issues (which I'm guessing has to do with it only having 9 af points) is holding me back only very slightly. For you owners of 5D's, is this a non-issue?

For normal day to day stuff no.
However If I am shooting action it is always the 40D first.. I can the use 5D or 350D (similar focussing system) however I will get more consistent results with the 40D because of the faster frame rate and improved focussing, for action. I have a friend with 5DII and a 40D and it is always the 40D he is using at motor racing events.

noooooooooooooone issue. I forgo all those stupid af points and set all my cameras to center afp ONLY. I'll decide where to focus, thanks much.
You want landscape sir, you definitely want the 5Dmk2. Landscape photography really benefits from the super wide angle lenses, which will do nothing for you on the crop sensor of any lesser body. Another bonus point of the 5Dmk2 is the better dynamic range (for stunning sunrises and sunsets) and better ISO handling for those night time shots. Actually... if your doing landscapes 99.9% of your shooting SHOULD be done at either sunup or sundown. So the extra dynamic range and iso handling are paramount. the 7D is absolutely a superb action camera, but the 5D walks all over it with landscapes. Dont get me wrong, the 7D can do almost anything you want it to, except ultra wide angle. You'll ONLY get that with full frame. The cost difference is definitely worth it if you plan on shooting landscapes. If you are doing action though, it can do it, but you wont be able to spray and pray. |
