Default Sharpness setting

I have a Canon 60D and the default sharpness setting is set to 3. Is this the best setting?

Higher end Canon cameras such as digital SLR cameras have an aperture setting that allows you to control the sharpness of your images. The aperture setting can be customized to an area of a photo that is not the focus, the background appear out of focus and less sharp. By adjusting the aperture and sharpness, you can put more emphasis on particular objects and subjects of the photos, like people.
Step 1
Turn the control dial located at the top right of the camera to "M" manual, position.
Step 2
Locate the Av + / - button on the back of the camera near the viewfinder.
Step 3
Increasing the aperture setting for the foreground and background of your images appear sharp. An aperture setting of F/20 increases the depth of field allowing the entire area of the photo to be strong. Decrease the aperture value, so that part of the picture seems less sharp and out of focus, as a background. An aperture setting of f / 6 of the causes of the photo that are not targeted to be less strong, allowing the area of interest to remain strong.

Not what the user is referring to.

Canon EOS cameras have picture controls which allow you to edit the look of an image when taken in the JPG quality settings. The default of "3" is exactly that: the default. You can adjust it if you need to. Instead what I'd recommend is seeing how it is and adjusting in post-processing after the fact. Ideally you'd actually shoot in RAW and do ALL your edits in post.

You are correct, I was referring to exactly that. I just know that I had adjusted it more in pp and was wondering what other people used and if it usually turned out better than the default without having to do much pp. I will just have to trial and error.
Thanks.

Golden, thanks for trying, although I do know how to blur, bokeh, etc.

The default sharpness varies between picture styles:
  • Standard: 3
  • Portrait: 2
  • Landscape: 4
  • Neutral: 0
  • Faithful: 0
  • Monochrome: 3
The best value is the one that gives you the results you want. Most folks seem to shoot Raw, and worry about sharpening during post-processing.
