Default Lens Upgrade Question

Hello,

I currently have a Canon Xsi w/the standard kit lens 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, a 50mm f/1.8, and a f/75-300 3.5-5.6 I'm looking into purchasing a new walk around lens. I was thinking of picking up a 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM or a 24-105 f/4L IS USM.

What do you think of the two lens? Is the price difference worth it? Should I go for the pro series glass if I don't plan on making money in the industry? Any help and or input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Depends on how you shoot. Using a software package like ExposurePlot to figure out what focal lengths and apertures you use most. If you use that 18-28 range a lot, you're likely better off with something wider.

Most people would opt for a 15-85 lens instead of the 24-105 for a crop-sensor camera.

Default Thought of the 18-135?

Hi,
I use the 18-135 and I like it just fine. It goes wider than the 28-135 for just a few dollars more. It is wider, and longer, and MUCH cheaper than the 24-105. I read, but don't know from experience, that it is sharper (@ same stop & FL) and the IS is better than the 28-135. No FTM, though. Food for thought.

Lots of shiny glass stuff and a few flashes. Latest hardware: 100-400L. Yippee!

I would save the money for a new body - something like the 7D would be a massive jump from a 450D.

If you are desperate to spend on a lens:
28-135 is very tight on a crop sensor, it would not be my choice would also be the 15-85mm.

Thanks for the info. I'm not desperate for a new lens, I just wanted something better than the kit lens. My other thought would be to just buy a 60D with the lens, but the 7d would be nice.

If you don't need fast glass and you're not planning on upgrading to a full frame, I'm with the others, get the 15-85mm.

The 24-105mm L is a very nice lens, good as a walkaround lens on a full frame, but you don't have any kind of wideangle view @24mm on a crop sensor. Same complaint on the 28-135mm, with it also being a lower quality lens than an L of course.

I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 for my Canon 7D and I have loved using it for years. It's a great walkaround lens and the ability to open up to f/2.8 is a tremendous benefit, especially for indoors when you want to avoid the need for flash. Good luck!
