Default Advice on Upgrade

My situation is this, I have a Canon 450D that I've been shooting with for over three years. Currently I am building my portfolio, so I'm using my camera a lot, much more than just the normal day to day pictures I use it for.

Ideally I want to upgrade to the Canon 5D Mark II, but because of the price, that is just not in the cards for me in the next year or two. However, with building my portfolio and gaining more clients, I'm afraid to just rely on my 450D, especially because I've used it for so long and have shot so many photos with it. I don't want to leave myself without a back-up in case something should happen to it, so I'm looking for another camera in the meantime before I am able to get my 5D. Currently I'm looking at the 40D, but I'm not positive if I should get it or just buy another cheap (older) Rebel.

Advice? Thoughts?

What about a 7D?

I would definitely look at a used XXD or 7D model if you can find one: the ergonomics of the dual wheel controls and top LCD/quick settings will make life a lot easier for you, and your 450D can become your backup body.

You know, it hadn't really crossed my mind. I honestly don't know much about the 7D, so I'll have to do some research on it.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions!
