Default Canon 1D X

Has been announced.

Canon EOS-1D X overview: Digital Photography Review

Rob Galbraith

18MP. Full frame. Replacing both the 1D and 1Ds lines (buh-bye APS-H). 12 fps RAW or RAW+JPEG, 14 fps JPEG while servo tracking. 4 [edit: whoops. 2] Digic5+ (at last!) processors (and an extra Digic4 for the AF?). AF system rework (lots of 7D features added). Ethernet port. Late March. Expected price: $6800.

What I find interesting about this is what it could mean for the 5D Mk III.

re: (b) The 5D is FF and the 7D is crop, so if you merged them, you'd have to merge into one or the other, and I think both have been pretty successful for Canon. If you merge into the 5D, that opens up room for the 70D (?) to be the top cropped camera again, which might make sense, but that's a lot of product line movement to sort out. I don't think they could get away with merging into the 7D (leaving the 1D X as the only FF camera) -- the D700 would eat their lunch.

The rumors I've seen still point to a 5D-III in November. That makes some sense just to pick up the Digic-5 chip. Maybe they end up using the same sensor with a cheaper / slower shutter & AF system?

What 14fps Looks and Sounds Like on the Canon 1D X

14fps is 840 frames per minute.
An AK-47 fires 600 rounds per minute
An M-16 is 700-950 rounds per minute.

That, friends, is just too many damned photos.

The included Ethernet port sure opens up more possibilities for the camera... Very interesting...

Sounds like you've got some nice cameras coming up in Canon Land. I'm looking forward to the new Nikon tech, but at this point, it's gonna be another generation or two before I get interested in upgrading my body (not that i'd ever turn a newer body down )

Thank god!

That means the D4 will probably be exactly what I'm hoping for.

Yeah, Thom Hogan says he's hearing 18MP for the D4 as well, and obviously, both cameras are getting pushed out in time for the Olympics. The problem is that everyone who's going to get a 1D X is going to have a relatively short amount of time to get used to the new beast, and there are so many significant changes in how it works. The D4 is supposed to be released a few months earlier, which is probably why Canon made their press announcement so far in advance: to keep folks from jumping systems.

Reading through Galbraith's overview, one of the weirder things that was mentioned is that the 1D X can switch to using an electronic 1st curtain (mostly to eliminate vibration from the mirror box). But. The max. sync speed is down at 1/250s (equal to the 1Ds), because of the larger sensor. It's also noted that the 14 fps speed is if you're shooting JPEG, and lock the mirror up, and if you go above iso 32,000, your speed lowers to 10 fps (can you say in-camera processing required?) I'm still trying to figure out that out vs. the claim that 51,200 is a native ISO.

Could the speed drop be due to heat? That's alot of signal amplification and if jpg there's certainly the write to jpg process. What happens to the write time in RAW at high ISO? (Course, that might be the marketing people too, defining any ISO the camera can perform is native to the camera, or some silly nonsense)
