Extender or new lens

Hi

need some advise - do I purchase a x2 extender or a new 100-400mm lens? I'm new to digital and mainly photograph landscape and macro using a Canon 5D MKII. I have a 24-105mm and a 28-200 (belongs to my partner) but find that sometimes I really need that extra length.

What do you shoot? Why do you need that range? What's the lowest f/stop on those lens?

The 100-400 while get you relatively close (from a distance) but is not a macro lens.

Unless you have a one series body the 2x TC will not autofocus all that well if at all with a the Canon 24-105 and may not even fit it (I own a 24-105 but do not own a TC).

My advice is that if you want something with a lot of reach that is hand holdable in good light get the 100-400

Even on a 1-series, you wont get AF on an f/5.6 lens with a 2x TC. That puts you into f/11 territory: f/8 is already pushing it.
