I just carry mine, I usually wrap the neck strap around my wrist a few times in case my hand lets go (also makes it hard for anyone to just grab it unless they plan on taking my hand with it). I carry my other lens in my small camera bag. If I'm going somewhere and need a little more equipment, I use the backpack.

For mechanical safety, if you do carry around quite a bit a canon bookbag or any bookbag designed for cameras is good, you can always put a little padlock on the zipper (to lock the two sliders together), even though its more a visual deterrent and that system might have implications on your ability to function with your equipment as well.

The biggest thing you can do to lessen risk is vigilance. Keep an eye on the people around you, but not to the point you can't do your work either, and keep your bags closed. If your going to be switching between two lenses get a holster type lens case and use that to protect the not in use lens, and make it easy to access without opening your expensive kit bag.

This is my input, someone may have better advice

That definitely helps if you live in a nation that allows it.

I just carry mine, and with a lens and grip and strap it is closer to $5,000. Life is too short to worry about stuff like that.

I used some condensed foam and nylon fabric to make an insertable body/2 lens protector that I could slip into a backpack or messenger bag. Something that doesnt scream "i'm a japanese tourist".

I later bought this bag and like it.

tamrac adventure 9 5549. Not as convenient as my lowepro slingshot, but nice when i need to carry a jacket, waterbottle, laptop, etc... and yet its not a huge bulky bag or a tiny backpack that looks like its made for a 5 yr old.

There are a few rules to life, (especially one without drama, trauma and loss).

1. Don't hang with STUPID PEOPLE.

2. Don't go to STUPID PLACES.

3. Don't do STUPID THINGS.

4. PAY ATTENTION. NEVER go condition white (oblivious to your surroundings).

It's nice if you can carry your gear in something a bit nondescript. Something that doesn't scream "I have thousands of dollars of equipment here, look at me!" A lot of people like the Crumpler bags, I have a Tamrac Rally 5 that I like a lot.

I'll leave the kaboom jokes at the door.

I give people a similar option.

I make no effort to hide my camera. The one time I tried to camouflage it I missed a great shot. Never again.
I use a non-typical heavy duty strap that goes over the left shoulder and places the camera at hip level on the right side.
The camera isn't as apparent as the standard neck strap.
