Yah that's bad news, that error is a catch-all for anything in the lens assembly on any powershot.. It hapend to me on a really important shoot. Anyway is the cam under warranty? If it is it's worth sending it to canon, otherwise your probably going to need to get a new camera.

No problem.

The E18 error used to be an issue when the lens would extend in a camera bag or pocket, causing it to jam or strip a gear or pop off track. In any case, it renders the camera useless.
People liked to blame the camera, but to me, in that case, it sounds more like operator error. If you back into a phone pole, you don't blame the car for "bad assembly".
There were some online "how tos" on repairing it yourself for different models, basically an out of warranty hail Mary. Either you fix the camera, or you buy a new one.

I'd be tempted to see this "shoot" done with a powershot. That sounds like an entertaining slideshow.

Lenses not extending is common, and usually about $150 to fix (speaking from experience at the retail level).

ah yes, I used my G3 when I did not want to carry my 50D. In this case I got to stand on a mountain 20 miles in the back county (I back-packed there hence not wanting to carry the 50D) watching one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen, without a Camera
