As I have moved over from my faithful Fujifilm S1500 which had one all round decent lens (for a point and shoot camera jumped up on steroids) I now need to know what sort of Lens are available for the Canon 1000D. I have the 18-55 kit lens, which is great around the home and out and about town as long as the subject is fairly close, but I like to shoot aircraft on approach to land, wildlife in my local nature reserve and the kit lens is not up to much for that. So going on these things what Lens would you suggest on a very tight budget? Most people I know have a 75-300 as well as the 18-55 would this be a good route to take? Thanks.

75-300 III is pretty much universally given the thumbs down. I have one, and it works ok, as long as you don't expect much from it, and you aren't shooting something that's moving quickly. Aircraft and wildlife tend to move quickly.
Realistically, you're not going to be completely happy with any <$300 lens for the subject matter you want to shoot. Your best chance is probably the non-L version of the EF 70-300 IS USM. But the lens you really want is the 100-400L ($1600). If you do have to get a budget telephoto zoom, I'd say go for the EF-S 55-250 IS or a Sigma 70-300 over the 75-300 III. They're slightly better optically. But these lenses are going to be slow (via max. aperture), so you'll have to use iso settings of 400 or higher in order to get your shutter speed fast enough to avoid camera shake blur (1/focal_length) rule of thumb. They'll be slow to autofocus. And they'll be sharper if you stop down to at least f/8. And they'll be a little short for birds if that's what you meant by wildlife.

id say go for the 55-250 if your on a budget, its a good lense for the price and handled properly can get some great results
for the price of it you can't expect the best results in the world but it lives up to its price tag
