Default For all of my Canon user friends out there

I would like to hear from anybody who has had experience with either of these two lenses:
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens

I am trying to make a decision here, thanks for your input..................

I have the 24-70. It's heavy, cumbersome, and not the sharpest lens you'll ever use. It's also in an extremely useful focal range, a 2.8 lens, and built like a tank. My take is you should get it if you need it. I basically see it as a must-have for Canon wedding and event shooters. Due to the convenience of the focal range, I have it on my camera quite often in portrait and studio work as well.

it depends on what you mostly shoot and what camera are you using, full frame or crop?

I am looking for a wider perspective. I shoot a 50D and XSI. This will be used for portrait and group photos.
Thanks for input.

I love my 24-70, solid as heck and sharp enough for anything I ever shoot..

on a crop sensor, 24mm is a bit hard for group shots.
you'll need to step back quite a bit.
the 24-70 is a great lens but if you're looking for a wider angle - go for the 17-55.
