Default Blurring Background on G10

I am a food blogger and since my DSLR died, the only camera I have is my G10. It doesn't seem to matter what I do I can't get the background of my images to blur. I'm shooting at f2.8 or zooming at the widest aperture I can. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong.

Almost impossible to get blurry backgrounds with a lot (all?) of P&S cameras, unless you are shooting at or near minimum focussing distances and the background is a fair distance away. Even then it is nothing like you can get with other cameras and fast lenses.

You may be able to add blur when PPing.

Depth of field is controlled by aperture, focal length, and camera distance to subject. Sensor size plays a role, but that's out of your control if you only have the G10 available. You're already shooting wide open at 2.8. You'll also want to shoot at your longest available focal length (ie, zoom in) and physically move as close to your subject as the composition will allow.
