Default Need help..buying a used lens...

I have decided to buy a used Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM (the older version), probably off Ebay, and I am wondering what to look for...is there anything I should look for in the listing? Is there anything I should look for in the photos? Is there anything I should ask? How do I tell when and where the lens was manufactured?

And what about the numbers stamped on the lens...what do they mean?..how do I decipher them? ..I have seen on some of the listings potential buyers asking for those numbers?

Is Ebay a good place to buy this? Any other suggestions for a place to look for quality used glass?

Any helpfull information or tips would be GREATLY appreciated

My local camera store had the older version in their used lens case for a couple of weeks. I was sorely tempted to buy it, but finally opted for a new f4 version. Same price and I get the slightly better series II construction, and just one stop slower. I went back and forth for 2 weeks until the lens disappeared from the case, then ordered the new f4 IS.

P.S. Just got the call from the store that my lens finally came in, just in time for my 3 week trip to Long Island in the Bahamas.

Thanks Rick, I am sure your new lens will make your trip that much more fabulous...the Bahamas and a new 70-200L lens, what more could you ask for?!?!? The 70-200L is just awesome! I, however, need the 2.8 because I like to shoot in low light w/o flash and I shoot a lot of action. I did check at my local camera store and they, sadly, did not have any used I ended up buying off Ebay, a decision I am REALLY hoping I do not end up regretting????. I haven't received the lens yet but am hoping for the best Thanks again for your help, and enjoy your trip

Looks like you made the right decision on the speed you need. Hope it works out for you. I've been playing around in the back yard with the new glass - I think I'm going to love this baby!

Hopefully I'll have some shots worth posting in the SYS or Critique forums.
