Default Er99 on Tamron lens at 200mm and above

Today I got a Er99 error while I was shooting with my Tamron 70-300mm telemacro lens on my Canon 350D. I've been using this lens ever since I got it in 2007 with no problems. I removed the battery, lens, and memory card. I let it sit for 20 minutes, I put in the battery and click no problem. I put in the memory card, click no problem. I put on a different lens and fired off a few shots, no problem. I put on the Tamron lens and took some shots, still no problem. I tried it at 100mm and it worked fine, but then I tried it at 200mm and then Er99 pops back up.

I tried it back at 70mm and no problem, so it's only giving me an error at 200mm and above. Anyone have any ideas?

ERR 99 - is not just for lenses. In my instance the entire shutter assembly had to be replaced on the body ( canon xsi). I like you, was switching different lenses cleaning the contacts, the works. Finally sent it in....225.00 later fixed - After going in circles with canon err99 is a catch all term for them which simply states something is wrong with the camera or lens connection. (according to a canon rep)

Yeah mine only happened in the upper range of the zoom lens which I found really strange. Either way I called Tamron as soon as I said Er99 the woman said you'll need to send it in. Turns out though that I bought it from an unauthorized dealer, and she tried to tell me it was a grey market lens which it's not. I argued with her and she looked it up by the serial number and said oh it's not a grey market lens, but you'll still have to pay for it to be repaired because it's from an unauthorized dealer. I didn't have the receipt anymore anyways but even if I had it was an unauthorized dealer and I'd still have to pay.

I guess the lesson learned is don't buy Tamron lenses or if you do make sure to get it through an authorized dealer. This whole experience though really soured me on Tamron lenses though. The way she just immediately said I needed to send it in like this happens all the time, made me not want to go through this experience again.
