Hi all
I been searching for a macro lens for a T2i. I bought the camera with the two kit lenses. They are Ok and I can't afford to upgrade them, but I was thinking all new lenses would be best I can get. I'm attracted to the 100mm Canon EF macro for the close ups but also for portraits at a distance. Its pricy but since I rented an ultra wide killer Canon lens to take on vacation I've become hooked. Is this lens the best investment and are there any second tiers that compare? Thanks for the help!

If you dont plan on going full-frame, or if you're dealing with stationary objects, then you can go to the EF-S 60mm macro for considerably less. If you wanna go up from the 100mm, Canon also have a 100mm L macro.
An ultra-wide lens has it's uses, and i LOVE mine, but it's not for everyone and can be very hard to learn how to use properly.

Thanks. I'd been leaning in that direction. Saving the $$ is the next hurdle.

The EF-S 60mm has good reviews for both macro and as a prime. The only downside is that for 1:1 macro you have to be very close to the subject. I have one ordered, but the backlog has been a issue since the earthquake.

Have you considered a set of extension tubes? You can buy a set from Kenko for around a hundred bucks and coupled with even a cheap lens like a 50mm 1.8 can yield some good results.
