Default Canon 18 - 55mm lens

I've researched for about an hour and can't seem to find a definitive answer. How many 18 - 55mm lenses did Canon make? Which ones were shipped with the Canon Rebel XS? Are there types that are IS and non-IS.

Looks like 3 were in production with a 4th (IS) on the way.

Actually. 5. Richard, I think you meant two with USM, two without.

This is why I love the Canon Camera Museum website. They list:

September 2004: EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

September 2004: EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM

March 2005: EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 II

March 2005: EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM

Wikipedia says there was a Mark III non-IS, which is optically similar to the IS version, but it's Wikipedia.

September 2007: EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Practically speaking, you want the IS version as it's the newest/sharpest, and you can pretty easily identify it by the pattern of the rubber grip on the zoom ring, as well as the absence/presence of the IS on/off switch.

Non-IS:

IS:

Which one ships with which camera varies, depending on the country you're purchasing in, etc. Usually, the description of the kit will indicate if it's the IS or not, though. Most of the US XS kits I saw had the IS version.

Thanks guys. I found one and I wanted to make sure that it was IS without alerting the seller and having them sell it separately. All I want is the lens and I'll have an extra body.

You're welcome. It's a serious time-sink, that one.
