Hello all, im new to the forum and hope to get some help. I own a Canon XSI - For what i do, i absolutley love the camera. The only thing i wish it did was shoot video as well. While looking at different cameras i came across the New Canon T3 which is in my price range, seems to do evrything the XSI did but also shoots video - I have someone lined up to buy the xsi - but i wanted to get some opinions from those who have been shooting and understand all of the different features better then i - (a newbee). Any help or insight would be appreciated thanks.

T3 is going down a tier. It's the 1100D and the successor to the XS. The dRebel model is the T3i (600D). While the T3, by being a later model, has a lot of the same capabilities of your XSi simply by being newer, be aware that it is a lower-tier model.
The T3i does 1080p (not 720p). It has a lot more video resolution/framerate choices. It has an articulated screen. It has a flash master in the pop-up. It can use an infrared remote. The T3 doesn't have these features.

A "flash master" means that you can use the pop-up flash on the T3i to "master" an off-camera "slave" flash. If you purchase a 430EX or 580EX hotshoe flash, you could set up that flash on a stand and then remotely set its power output level and tell it to fire using the built-in flash on the T3i. If you have a T2i or T3, you'd have to purchase another flash master unit (550EX, 580EX, 580EX II, or ST-E2) to do that.
This isn't the only way to set off a flash remotely, and it's not even the cheapest, but it can easily be the most convenient. This really only comes into play, though, once you start reading the Strobist.

Canon T3 is not a real upgrade from Canon XSi. Instead try Canon T3i or even the older model Canon T1i you will get all the features of Canon XSi + full hd video with all controls and if you also want external mic jack for better sound than consider Canon T2i.

The biggest differences between the T2i and the T3i are the swiveling LCD viewscreen and the ability to use remote flashes without extra stuff. And the $100 price difference isn't that big a deal.
I was fortunate that the company I was going to buy the T2i from was out of stock when I had the money, and then they got the T3i in, so I jumped on it. Also, you don't have to use the Canon flashes as slaves to be able to access the remote flash capabilities. I use a Sigma EF-610DG Super and it works great. Kevin Veritas Imagery NW |
