Default 85mm | what would YOU go for?

hi all,

I have two portrait lenses in mind right now:

1. 85mm f/1.8
2. 85mm f/1.4

the thing is the 1.4 is manual focus only

would you go for the extra exposure or the autofocus?

Unless you really need that extra razor thin depth of field go for the 1.8

Agreed with Kirbinster.

What make are they? I don't believe Canon makes an 85mm f/1.4, just the 1.8 and the 1.2L.

my vote goes for the autofocus 1.8, especially if you're mostly shooting moving targets (kids, pets, etc) and a hell of a lot less expensive too

Hi Susan,
the first one is canon.. the second one - I keep forgetting, but it's a sharp good lens as far as I've seen...
and as mush as I'd love to get the 85mm f/1.2 - it's way way way out of my budget!

I too would go for the 1.8 although I use a 85mm F3.5 on my Nikon d90 and d7000

In that case, I'm with everyone else - stick with the Canon 1.8. It's next on my list, cannot wait to get it. The bokeh is just fantastic!

Samyang make a pretty good (optically) 85/1.4. Totally manual though. Plus side: it's cheap.

Yeah, but when photographing kids that run a mile a minute, MF isn't the best option for me, lol. I'd rather spend the extra cash and get AF.
