Default Calling ALL Canon 5D users (NOT Mark II)

I'm toying with purchasing the 5D from a friend of mine. I have been using a Rebel Xsi and have been quite disgusted with the ISO capabilities, so grainy even at ISO400

I ADORE shooting in natural light and I'm dying to get something that will enable me to do more in low light situations. I still consider myself to be a newbie with all this, even though I've been shooting for a while. I need some help, lol!!!

I would LOVE to hear from anyone that has or still is using the 5D (NOT Mark II). Would it be a good stepping stone for me?

Thanks!!!!

It's a good camera.
IQ is a step up from your existing camera and it actually easier to use due to the better viewfinder and the large wheel on the back..

What lenses do you have at the moment?
You will not be able to use EF-S lenses.

Forgive my naivety (told you I'm still new to all this, just starting to learn about lenses), but what will I be able to use and what's the difference?

I have a Canon EFS 18-55mm 5-5.6 (the kit lens), a Tamron AF 70-300mm 5.6, and the Canon EF 50mm 1.8.

EF_S lenses can only be used on the "consumer" cameras (the lens mounts are different and the lenses will not cover a larger sensor).
Cannot be used on the 1 or 5 series bodies.

EF lenses can be used on all Canon cameras.

The Tamron and 50 F1.8 will be fine. The 18-55 will not.
I use a Canon 24-105 F4 L IS on my 5D for a walk around/general purpose lens.

Bummed about this. This was the one lens I really had hoped to be able to hold onto. I know that I can sell the camera/kit lens and save towards another lens but really didn't want to have to do that.

There's definitely no way I can go with an "L" series . Any recommendations for something a little more in my price range?

I REALLY appreciate your help Richard. You've given me a lot to think about. Thanks so much!!!

I havn't had any experience with standard full frame zooms (except for my old 28-105 from my film days).

Howver this looks pretty good. (28-135) From $US299 (refurbished) - $US455 (new) at Adorama
