Hi all just bought my first ever DSLR. Got a 550D (18-55 IS kit lens). Still trying to get accustomed to the various controls etc. I know this kit lens will help me learn but still inclined to get the EF 50mm f/1.8 II both because of its Image Quality and cost.
What do you suggest? |

If you want a taste of shallow DOF and a better ability to shoot non static subjects in low light, then yes. Budget for a lens hood.
One thing; Do not get caught up in collecting gear. Master what you have now and then you will know what you need (not want) to take your photography further.

A lens may prevent unwanted light hitting the front of the lens, thus causing image degradation.
Here is an example (not mine); New Mexico PhotoJournal: September 10, 2006 It also may prevent fingers etc from touching the front of the lens. Usually one lens hood will not fit a number of lenses. Canon consumer lenses (not L) do not come with them. Some third party (non Canon) lenses do come with them.

The 50mm 1.8 is a very affordable lens and I think it will allow you learn more about focusing and depth of field. In many photography books there are examples of adjusting aperture beyond or at the limit of most kit lenses.
I do have to agree with RichardTaylor that you don't want to get caught up in buying gear. Guitarists call it GAS. Instead of amps and pedals photographers have lenses and filters. |
