Lightbulb What Lens Should I Buy For My Canon 450D???

Ok I have the 450D with the 18 - 55mm Kits Lens!?

I Just bought it new there and Im new to all this photography.

Ive been using the kit lens for a while but I wanted to know what lens I should go for next?

I want to take alot of land scapes, close ups, moving objects, cars, animals and people as I dont have a set preference.

What do you recomend? I only have a budget of under £130 for this lens and then In a few months ill buy a bigger and better lens.

A direct link to one say on ebay would be helpful and please give me as much advice as possible..

Ryzzz

Normally, someone upgrading from the kit lens is trying to accomplish one of two things:

(1) Expand your focal length range (ie, wider or more telephoto)
(2) Improve on the quality of your kit lens (image quality, optical speed, build quality)

Does one of those two things apply to you?

Canon Lenses / by Manufacturer / Lenses / Camera-Catalog.com

Canon EF lens catalogue range | Cameralabs

I suggest looking at the EF-S 18-135mm IS, one of the newer lenses on the Canon lineup with a rating of 4 stops IS. F3.5-5.6, the 3.5 on the wide zoom is a plus, considering other expensive lenses have F4.

The first thing i would suggest you do is save your money. there isnt much in the 130 dollar range that will be any better than the one you have.

if you like to, or want to, take macro style close up shots i'd recommend getting extention tubes.

Kenko AF Extension Tube Set (EOS) | Canada, Edmonton, McBain Camera
(mind thats in canadian prices, would likely be around 130 euros, not sure)

the extention tubes allow you to get much much closer to the subject with ANY lens, so any lens you get in the future can become "macro". they arnt perfect though, as once you've put them on you'll only be able to take a shot at a specific distance from your subject, unlike a true macro lense which can focus to infinity. Much much cheaper than a true macro lense though.

I bought my first "good" lens the other day, and i can definatly tell you from the experience that the premium cost for a "good" lens is worth every single dollar. So save the money, save a little more, and get a good quality lense.

But if you must buy one, the 50mm 1.8 needs to be in everyones kit. It makes a purdy picture.

That's the lens I got with my Canon EOS 550d rather than the stock 18-55 lens as it made sense at the time for me to spend a little more and get better at the start as I knew it would be a while before I'd be spending money buying new lenses. So far I must say I think I made the right choice, it's a nice lens for the money and a good budget "all rounder".

Neither the Kenko nor Canon extension tubes will work with EF-S lenses. There may be some tube sets that do, but not those.

iRyzzz: If you are trying to spend £130 now and then more later, I would say save your 130 and lump it together with whatever else you can manage. The kit lens can do everything you listed except for extreme closeup. For that your mot economical and convenient option would be the EF-S 60mm Macro lens, about $450US. Stay away from the 50mm Macro, it won't magnify to true 1:1 without an addition extension. There are other ways to go macro; you could buy the 50mm f/1.8 and extension tubes or reverse mount it on your kit lens, etc. These methods are a bit of a hassle though, it's up to you.

If you really want lenses though, I suggest the 24mm f/1.4L, 35mm f/1.4L, 85mm f/1.2L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, and 400mm f/2.8L. That should cover you.

Um... actually, I think the Kenkos were updated to handle EF-S two or three years ago; the problem is they don't have a model designation so you can clearly figure it out. At any rate, if you get non-compatible ones, you can always take a Dremel tool to 'em to make 'em EF-S compatible . And the Canon Mk IIs can take EF-S (I think it's WHY they made Mk IIs). This stuff, it's always a-changing.

The Pro Optics are definitely EF-S compatible, but build quality then becomes the issue.
