Default a good point and shoot that shoots in raw?

Hey everyone,

I am thinking about replacing my old Canon P&S camera (it's 6 megapixel and getting a little old). However, I really got used to shooting in RAW format with my DSLR.

Can anyone recommend a good P&S camera that shoots in RAW, preferably under USD 200? It doesn't have to be Canon, either (it's what I'm used to but I'd be up for branching out).

Thanks for any ideas!

~Lina

I say just grab a PowerShot you can afford that can use the CHDK.

I use the CHDK with my SX20is and Rawtherapee 3 to process the RAW files. The G12 (or any newer G series) and I think the S90 and S95 shoot raw without the hackers kit.

I don't know what other makers P&S's shoot in RAW.

All the G series (with the inexplicable exception of the G7) and S powershots shoot RAW and have the PSAM modes, but used, the previous generation is typically in the $300 range. The current ones are close to the $400 range.

The SX, A, and SD series typically don't, but some of them can use the CHDK. Unfortunately, it's usually not the new ones, because it takes a while for firmware hackers to code up a CHDK firmware version for a camera.

i recommend the lumix fz series ... fz35/48 or the top of the line fz100 ...

i used to own the fz28 ... the models mentioned above are it's latest incarnations on steroids ...
leica lens, raw, superzoom, macro, the usual PSAM modes. great 'honest' colors

some samples i took with the fz28

thanks for all the suggestions!

wow, I realize that there are few options for cameras in my price range...! I think I'll have to do more research before I commit to one.

Thanks again!

I'll second the Panasonic FZ series (I've got an FZ28). I used to own a Canon G3, too, which was really, really good. If you don't need the zoom range of something like the FZ, I think the image quality of the G-series is going to be a little better. In your price range, I think you'll have a lot more options if you're open to used equipment.
