I'd have to doubt there's a plan to put this sensor in consumer, or even pro grade 35mm cameras...not even sure if there's a place for it in large format cameras? Possibly planned for super high end imaging applications in medical, space, military, surveillance, etc.??

That said, I don't think we should be expecting a 120MP Rebel in the near future..lol. If I had any say in what I'd like to see manufacturers do it would be to give us sensors with better dynamic range, and not just more megapixels.

Those are my thoughts as well. Military

You know many companies will do proof of concept projects even though there may not be any immediate use planned. They'll take a handful of their key propeller head design engineers, close them up in a room, throw some resources at them, let them go at it, and see what comes of it. Even though this might not have any real useful applications today, (hard to say for sure) what often does comes out of these projects is new and better technologies that can be applied to today's products. It's done in the auto industry with their show cars, very often just to test the market's reaction to something new and innovative. And I agree, military high altitude imaging, or maybe in applications like the Hubble space telescope cameras seem to be likely candidates

Another downside to it... it will really bring out any flaws in the lens, and that can be significant even with a middle of the road sensor. Just because the sensor is capable, it still doesn't guarantee a perfect image. I can see needing a $10,000 dollar walk around lens to properly match the sensor's capability.

That is true, it is becoming very clear that that there needs to be a major advance in lens making if the electronics keep going in the direction they are.
