Okay, so I own the 7D but I really want a full frame camera. So I'm investigating the 5D mkii used via craigslist or some other option. I'm noticing I can get the 5D mk ii for around $2000 give or take....but then I searched 1D just for the hell of it. I'm seeing a 1D mk3 for a little more...besides megapixels...what is the tradeoff etc?
On the Canon side, the 1D are all ahead of the 5D's so I'm wondering how do i go about comparing etc? Any help would be great! |

The 1D is not a full-frame camera. It's APS-H (1.3x).
The 1Ds is full frame. You can use EF lenses on all the Canon dSLR bodies. You can only use EF-S lenses on Canon 1.6x crop bodies. So if you have any EF-S lenses, you can only use those on the 7D. If you have Tamron Di II, Sigma DC, or Tokina DX lenses, they'll mount all right on full-frames, but the image circle won't cover the sensor, and you'll have vignetting.

I'm looking at my lens now, is there no easy way to discern EF-S on the lens body? How can I tell? |

actually I just looked them up via the canon site, looks like the lenses i have now are EF

It should say EF or EF-S right on the lens; however, if you mount it to the camera matching the white square instead of a red circle, it is an EF-S lens.

The 1D series are the professional level of cameras. They have the best build quality and designed for more shutter actuations than the other cameras, along with some other things that make them special. That being said, the 5DII is an awesome camera and it is full frame. I now have a 7D. I've had the 1DIII and the 5DII. I am going to get a 5DII again as I want the full frame while keeping my 7D too. I loved the 1DIII, it was just too heavy for me. As inkista stated, the 1Ds is FF, not the 1D. On the used market, a 1DsIII is considerably more than a 1DIII.
It isn't really fair to compare a 1D series to a non-1D as they are completely different classes of cameras.
