Default Canon 40d - what am I doing wrong?

Hi

I recently upgraded to a Canon 40d, as opposed to my old Canon 400d.

I must be doing something wrong, have a wrong setting on or something.

All the Auto settings work fine, but when I try to shoot in AV, TV or Manual, no matter wat I do, when I press on the shutter button the lens stays open for a long LONG time - as though I were trying to take deep night shots, and when it finally closes, the shot never actually does get taken at all.

What am I doing wrong?

I bought it second hand, so it could very possibly be a fault. Thought I would ask here first though, before I take it to a menders.

I am no expert, but if you think you may have a wrong setting, go into menu go along to the third yellow spanner, go to clear settings press set, select clear all camera settings & press set again, this will take the camera back to its default setting when you first bought the camera.

Hope this is of help
Terry

Ok, have just discovered something...it must be me, but I don't know how to adjust this.

I have to press the shutter button twice in order to release the shutter. So once to open the lens (I think) and the second time to close it again!

That can't be right, can it?

Hi Terry

Thanks for your help..I did try this already and no bananas, I'm afraid!

Very odd problem, but for sure something really silly on my part - seeing as how I now have to press the shutter button twice!

In all of these modes, you should be able to see what the camera is set to (aperture & shutter speed). These are visible in the top panel and in the viewfinder. You want to make sure that the shutter is operating at the same speed it says it's going to operate, so the first step is to find out what the camera thinks its setting is.

It actually almost sounds like you're in "bulb" mode, though, based on your last comment. If so, the top panel should indicate "bulb".

Glad you found the solution. There's no question that there's a ton to learn on that camera - I just upgraded from a 30D to a 40D, and even between those two, there were quite a few updates.
