Default Can I set exposure compensation with a Tamron lens?

I have just bought the 60D with the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens but I am having difficulty setting exposure compensation. I have checked my handbook which says to check the "unlock" button. I have tried this with no result, so still cannot set exp comp as I like it. Does this mean that you cannot do this with a third party lens? I hope not!

According to the Canon site, you have to be in either AV/P/TV mode to do it.

Yes thanks .... got it! I was trying to use the dial on the top of the camera as I did on the 1000D, instead of the one on the rear.
