Default Canon 40D v. 50D

Hi, this is my first post actually since I joined, anyways... ...

I want to buy my first DSLR and I'm debating between the 40D and the 50D, I've used the 40D before and loved it, but I guess my question is, if it is really worth expending the extra $100-$200 on the 50D?

My main use would be as a hobby, I've taken photography classes before and I pretty much know all the basics, I would be shooting street, sports, scenery, nothing really professional.

any help, comments, suggestions, are welcome and appreciated.

I know the 60D just came out, but I'm not really into video and it's out of my budget, as well as the 7D. So my real affordable options are the two mentioned above.

Thank You.

Whether or not it's worth it is up to you. But if you go with the 50D, you'll get a camera with:
  • higher resolutinon (15MP vs. 10MP)
  • more advanced processor (Digic IV vs. Digic III)
  • slightly better liveview functionality
  • slightly better weathersealing
  • HDMI output (you may not care about video, but you might still want to see your photos on the tv).
  • much higher resolution LCD (920k vs. 230k dots)
  • higher ISO settings (100-3200 w/6400 12800 pushed vs. 100-1600 w/3200 pushed)
  • autofocus microadjust

I own a 40D and never touched a 50D. However, I had the chance to get a 50D at a VERY reasonable price but at the end I went for the 40D. Basically it's cheaper and the features on both are very alike; the burst speed on the 40D is slightly faster than 50D and thats a big plus for me.

OTOH I miss the higher ISO setting on the 50D, but I can live without it.

I don't mean to be rude, but saying that the burst speed on the 40D is faster making it a big plus must be a joke.

50D: 6.3FPS
40D: 6.5FPS

.2 is not something you'll notice, at all. Also the 50D is transferring 50% more data in the same basic time frame.

Also the mA on the 50D makes it a really good choice there.

The only blurred line I've seen ,is people reporting the 40D produces slightly (pixel counter) less noise in high ISO situations.

I didn't know that someone can still buy a 40D. I thouhgt they were discontinued. If someone can still buy a 40d were would someone buy them? I checked B&H PHOTO and all they had was a refurbish one.

You can't buy a NEW one, unless someone has one hidden in a back room somewhere. Your only option is refurb or used from a private owner.

And this is also suspect, as it's typically done by 100% crop comparisons, which don't take into account the higher resolution of the 50D.

Yeah, that's why I said pixel counters; it's nothing you'll notice without over scrutunizing the images.
