Default Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II ='s 80mm?

I am considering purchasing the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II to mount on my Canon 7D...I want to first take some pics to see how that focal length will work for me. So if I use my EF-S 18-135mm kit lens do I set the focal lenth at 80mm to similate using the EF 50mm on my crop body (using the 1.6x crop factor)?

What about the crop factor? Wouldn't 50mm on my EF-S lens equate to a 30mm EF lens?

The 50mm on the kit lens is equal to the 50mm prime. The crop factor applies to both. It will actually act like an 80mm shot. 50x1.6=80 on both

The crop factor is not in the lens, but the camera body. Using your zoom lens @50mm will render the same field of view as a 50 mm prime.

You have a Canon 7d which is a 1.6X factor crop

Using a 50 mm lens on a 1.6X crop equates to using an 80 mm ON A FULL FRAME CAMERA.
