If it were me, I'd be real careful with aftermarket batteries unless they were approved by the camera manufacturer. The risk of doing damage to an expensive camera is just not worth the chance, IMHO. The standard battery life on 7D should be excellent, and should be able to get you through most days of shooting. I'm not saying that they'd be bad or a problem, but why take the chance?

I've used "offbrand" batteries in D300 And D3...Honestly, I think they are the same. However, don't count on them being "extended life"...a bit of that is a stretch of truth... (the MAh rating might be a complete lie)

The battery is the one removable component from your camera that can seriously damage your camera. There are stories out there of aftermarket batteries overheating and melting. I'm sure there are many legit vendors out there, but I only use Canon batteries in my $1500 camera body.

I personally have purchased off brand batteries for my 7d. If your worried about damaging the camera, buy the inexpensive grip so you never put the batteries in your camera!! I've had no problems thus far.

Hi guys,
It is true that you do have to be careful with aftermarket batteries. This is because there are literally thousands of factories in China and they DO NOT all operate or be held to the same standards. That said if you are buying your aftermarket batteries from a reputable supplier you will have no issues because the build quality and materials used will be first class. I actually started a company that supplies replacement batteries so this type of discussion is pretty close to home for me. It was this type of discussion that we kept seeing time and time again which made us implement a $10,000 camera guarantee with all of our batteries. At the end of the day the company that supplies you with a genuine or non-genuine battery should be willing to stand by the product and pay for any damages, unfortunately not many are willing. Liam
