Default Camera Going Bad?

I've noticed that sometimes the image quality on my most recent pictures doesn't look as good as normal. I was told that all the noise is probably from under-exposure, which makes sense.

I took this picture today. The image below was zoomed in at 500% in PSE 9. Notice how her mouth isn't really even in one piece?

After seeing that, I found a picture of the same girl that I had taken in September. I zoomed it in to 500%, and it's sooo much better. Pixelated of course, but not "gridy".

Is this because of camera settings, or what? Just curious! The camera sat on a shelf for a little over a year, and then I got it. It's gotten lots of use and is about 7 years old. Could be time for an upgrade...

That first image is somewhat worrisome, but the second isnt. Confusing, this.

Do you have any idea what the problem is?

Yeah, that doesn't look good. I would send a copy to Canon's online help center & ask for their opinion.

The first image shows considerable JPEG artifacting. I've never seen a Canon produce those artifacts, even on lowest-quality JPEG. So I have to ask: what kind of camera is this, what were the camera capture settings (Raw, Raw+JPEG, JPEG Large, Normal/Fine/Super-fine, etc.), and what post-processing had the photo been through beforehand?

I'd really be looking at the post-processing chain for someplace that stored in low-quality JPEG. That's by far the most likely culprit.

You know what's really strange? I took another photo yesterday, zoomed in to 500% again and it was fine... If it happens again I'll definitely contact them though!

I'm not sure you mean by what kind of camera it is. It's a Canon Powershot S1 IS which is an Advanced Point and Shoot. It was set on JPEG, 1/1250 shutter speed, F5.0 apature, ISO 200. I couldn't find the quality settings (think it's on Fine though)---but it was on the size M2 (1024x768 px) There was no post processing done to it.

What program are you using? Were both of these photos saved to the PC with the same program and same settings?

I use PSE 9, but there wasn't any editing done to either photo. Yes they were saved to the PC with the same settings and everything.

Could be a camera problem or could be your card. Do you format your cards each time you insert them in the camera or do you simple erase the previous images? If you are only erasing them you really are not removing the data from the card eventually you can end up with corrupted images. If you are formatting on a regular basis and the card is old it may just be wearing out try a new card that has not been used before , remember to format it in camera first. Then see if you are still having problems if you are Canon help is the next step..

Thank you so much! I had never even thought of the card going bad. Yes, I do format my cards each time but the card is very old. I'll try using a new one for a while!
