Default Canon FD lenses- keep or sell?

Hello everyone!

I've been cleaning out my camera gear in the hopes of selling equipment I don't need to generate some cash for new lenses etc, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with this dilemma.

My father has given me two old FD lenses- a 70-210 f/4.0 and a 28mm f/2.8. I've heard on other websites that using these on my 40D might break the mirror, and I wanted to clarify whether this is the case. In essence, is it worth keeping these and finding an adapter? I don't mind the fact that they'd only work with manual focus, as I'm still an amateur and being forced to use manual would probably be good for me. My current lenses can be found in my signature- would these be a good edition?

If it's not worth trying to convert them, does anyone know how much they would sell for? They seem to be in good condition- they're not battered at all, they both have Hoya UV filters and cases which are a little worn but still hold together just fine.

Thanks!

Lale

You wont be able to get them to mount without the adaptor, but even then, you need to get one with a glass element to get the full focus range (Ie out to infinity). Most glass adaptors arent very good.

The other option is to have the mount on them replaced, but that's certainly not a cheap option, though Ive seen it done.

Or you could do what was done here:

FD/FL EOS conversions typically aren't worth it unless you can machine parts for yourself, or you're willing to pay someone else $300-$800 (which typically means the lens was an L or an f/1.2 lens to begin with). For the two lenses the OP's talking about, it's probably not worth it. I blew $290 on an old Oly OM-mount Zuiko 50/1.2 and adapted that instead.

However, find someone who shoots Samsung NX, Sony NEX, or micro four-thirds, and they can adapt an FD/FL lens for their camera, so the lenses should still be sellable.

Perhaps. I really don't find it to be too difficult. In fact I believe the hardest part for most people is obtaining the confidence to actually embark on a task like this. The second hardest is patience for most; number one for me....
