Which Powershot IS. Like all camera's you need a certain amount of light. Your options are: use the flash, use a tripod, learn the exposure triangle and take full control of your camera to take the best picture you can with the light you have.

I have used my sx20is to take a lot of night photos. I find that it is best to be in shutter priority (Tv I think) so I can force the camera to take a picture that looks like night. Otherwise the camera tries to expose so that night looks like day and you haven't got a hope of taking a shot hand held. My SX20is works well down to about 1/30s shutter speed. For some reason I find the D10 needs about 1/40s. I will use ISO 400 or less unless I absolutely have to use ISO 800 to get the shot. Good steadying technique is crucial to taking shots at such a slow shutter speed.

Most Canon P&S cameras have more than enough features and ability but like DSLR's you have to learn how to use them. Reading articles here will help you understand what the camera is doing and how to control it. Learn to use PASM (P, Tv, Av & M for Canon) modes. The nice part is that most of the skills you will learn will transfer easily is you ever upgrade to a DSLR.

You might want to check out the posts for beginners over on the DPS Blog: Digital Photography Tips and Tutorials

That should help you start to get your head around the various settings and why some of the things you mentioned are happening. Especially the blurry baptism shots. Night shots, yep, you got it right, those will need a tripod.

Meanwhile, welcome to the forums!
