yes I got a 7D for Christmas..
I'm unable to find any information through my manual or the canon website to answer this question How do I disable the firing of the pop up flash when i'm using my speedlight 430EX remotely? ie: I want to remote fire my speedlight without the popup flash firing

How are you telling the remote flash what to do? How are the signals getting to it?

wireless control.. but all I can find says that the pop up flash has to be "popped up" in order to use flash control. unless I mount my 430EX on camera.. which I don't want to do ..
I want the flash mounted on a tripod it controls it wirelessly ( might have just made that word up ) but the pop up flash fires too.i'm tryin gto fire the remote flash and not the pop up

The pop-up has to flash (but shouldn't contribute to the photo) in order to tell the remote flash what to do.

Aye, the master flash has to pop up and flash to trigger the slave. You need wireless triggers or an extension cord to trigger the remote otherwise - the flash won't pop up if you have something in the hotshoe.

The flash has to be up to trigger the external flash but doesn't have to fire. Check the manual pg 119-121. The pop up flash sends a pulse to the wireless flash to trigger it but doesn't fire.

And that "pulse" is the flash firing. It does this before the the shutter opens and therefore does not contribute to the exposure.
