Default Canon 550d or Nikon?

hi all.. i'm saving up to buy my first dslr next year. i have my eyes set on a 550d, as i have always been a canon user. however, i've heard some good reviews about nikon cams as well. i primarily love taking landscapes, skyline and other scenery shots, and i was told by a friend of mine that nikon captures outdoor lighting better than canon cameras do. i wasn't too sure about what she meant, so i thought of asking you guys here. is this true? if so, is there a good nikon camera you can suggest which belongs to about the same price range as the 550d? i'm living in new zealand by the way, and i'm hoping to go on nature trips soon, once i get a new cam and learn more about photography. thanks in advance for any input you may share.

He was just joking.

Both are good systems.

I feel your friend is incorrect.

Within a similar price range I would be looking at a Nikon D90.
I would not be looking at the low end Nikon cameras like the D3000-D5000 etc..

Best thing to do is go into a camera store and have a play with them.

Yeah, I agree with this. Have a play and get a feel for the different cameras available. It makes a big difference! :-)

I own both the Nikon D90 and the new Nikon D7000 and both are great for what he wants to do and the lenses are compatable for both. For a person that likes to change settings in Portrait mode and Landscape mode such as contrast etc can be done in the menu of both cameras. I use these modes a lot and also use manual on the mode dial to set exposure on the minus side or the plus side of normal depending on lighting etc.

I usually tell people to buy the same brand as their friend that has the most lenses/accessories... that way they can borrow!

unfortunately, since i'm not originally from here in nz, i don't have that many friends yet who share the interest i have in photography. all my friends who have dslr's are back home. hopefully, i'll get to join a photography club here soon once i have my own dslr. thanks for the tip.
