Default Need help

Dear Sir/Madam

One of my friends Canon 500D user got one problem on his Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 TELE-MACRO (1:2) 62 A17 Error code : "Err 01 : Communication between camera and lens is faulty, clean the lens contacts”.

As that message said we have properly cleaned the contacts of the lens, which also not helped. As I am a Nikon user it is unknown to me. Please help us what to do. From my little knowledge I asked him to send it to servicing. But one problem with us that at India we do not have any service center of Tamron. One of our friends told that we need to upgrade the firmware of the lens, but the process is also unknown to us. One confusion with us is that this lens has been working with same camera for last 6-month without any problem.

One more advise we need from your side, now he is planning to purchase a zoom lens within his budget. He asked me which one to be purchased (Wildlife photography is his main target though):

01. EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
02. EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM
03. EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III

Please guide us with your valuable advice.

Thanking you
With regards
Pranab

An Err01 error basically means the communication between the lens and the body isn't working right. Make sure the lens is correctly seated on the mount.

Also, you need to check not just the lens contacts, but the ones in the camera as well. If any of the pins in the camera are bent/broken, that's going to require service.

If everything's physically ok, then updating the firmware may work. Depending on how old the lens is, it may also require rechipping if it's an older used lens.

In terms of updating the firmware, the first thing is to check what version of firmware the camera has. This webpage will give you the directions for checking which version of firmware is on the camera, and also how to download the firmware update, put it on the memory card, and then apply it to the camera firmware. Read all the warnings. You definitely want to make sure that the battery is fully charged before you do this. You do not want the camera to turn off while the firmware's in the middle of updating.

I wouldn't recommend purchasing the old 75-300 IIIs. I have one, and it's cheap, but that's its only virtue. The EF-S 55-250 IS is probably a better buy, but it's also a consumer-grade lens.

Default Thanks

Thanks to Madams Photologyst & Inkista for the kind reply. I will discuss with my friend will follow the necessary steps to rectify the lens. We discuss with our local Canon user group for lens selection as my friend going to his course workshop day after tomorrow to forest. And the local Canon user advised to go for "EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS", so he purchased the lens and went to join their group.

Thanking you again for the kind help.

With regards
Pranab.
