Exclamation Canon Rebel XS: Error 01 (Lens Communication Failure)

Hi all,
Has anyone faced the "Error 01: Communication between the lens and body has failed"
This problem occurs frequently with my Canon Rebel XS and 18-55IS kit lens.
Sometimes switching on and off the camera corrects the problem... and sometimes screwing the lens back on again only works..

I have faced this problem at the most crucial of situations, and it's indeed quite frustrating.. I notice that it's more likely to occur at the lower side of the zoom (18mm..)

Would like to know if it's a frequently occuring issue with Canon bodies/lenses, or is it just me?

Btw, this issue has never occured with my 50mm.. so it may very likely be a lens problem.

TIA!

The issue is the contacts on the lens and the contacts on the body (the metal bits on the mount) aren't meeting properly or arent connecting properly. First step is to make sure the contacts are clean on both. Using a pencil eraser can help clean that up, just be careful not to get anything inside the camera body or lens.

Hi OsmosisStudios

Thanks, that's what I suspect too. The contacts may not be clean, or that they aren't quite connecting properly, i tried cleaning with a cotton swab... lemme try the pencil eraser suggestion as well... thanks!

Default T1i 500D and 17-85IS combination

Hi. I get the same error with this combination, but only if the lens is set wider than about 40mm. It is worse when the weather is cold or damp. I'm wondering if this is due to a bad contact or resistor within the lens - whatever it uses to register focal length.

It does not do it with other lenses and the fault is unaffected by IS or AF switches.
