Default Why does everyone hate the 60D?

I am wanting to upgrade my camera from a 1000D to a 60D but upon visiting two of my local camera dealerships they both told me that the 60D wasn't viewed well at all and the majority of customers are buying the 7D instead. I know the 7D is a superior camera but not that much surely. They both have similar spec so what's the fuss? Is it all subjective about the "feel" and case build rather than the operation? At the moment the 60D had come down in price quite a lot so the attraction to buy is there, but am I missing something or is it just the "old pro's" having a moan?

going from the 1000D to 60D is a big improvement.
the "hate" you're referring to is coming from pervious owners of the XXD series (40D, 50D) which don't see a big improvement on their side.

As MrJones explained, the "hate" is coming from the previous ##D owners. Canon didnt exactly make the 60D to be a 50D replacement. They made a lot of changes, many of which arent that great.

The 7D has a lot of features that are superior (and what was expected of a 50D replacement). Its also only a bit more.

The ##D series was always designed to be a middle step between the Rebels and the 5D/1D series. Now Canon has gone and made that one step into two steps (60D and 7D). Which you'll be better off with depends entirely on you. A good shop will try to find what works best for you, not what is going to make them the most money

60D is an amazing camera. Don't listen to those that bash for no better reason than to make themselves feel more adequate. You will see a big improvement coming from the 1000D.

You will see a large improvement from the 1000D. I disliked the 60 because of the layout and the articulated screen. But this is a matter of taste. Go hold them both in your hand and see which one feels better as they have a distinctly different feel. You will also see they are two different caliber cameras.

Know that the 7D is a metal body while the 60 is plastic. The 60D also uses SDHC cards just like your 1000. Also the 7D goes to CF cards instead of SD cards. With class 10 SD cards being so fast I do not see why Canon insists on staying with the CF cards as one tiny piece of dirt in the card and you have a junk camera.

This comes down to a matter of what you intend to shoot. If you tend to be rougher on gear then the 7D is for you.

This link may help you better as you can compare them side by side.

I think most of the complain you are hearing is from the 50D shooters. The 60D is rumored to replace it. However the two are simply not the same.

I blame dpreview.

They focused more on what the 60D wasn't, rather than on what it was, and then damned it by slapping the dRebel label on it. For some weird reason, folks seem to take some kind of status by how highly-tiered their gear is, so slamming the 60D as not really being an XXD body, but really more of a jumped-up dRebel impressed itself upon the brains of many who only read reviews online and don't actually bother to shoot with gear or try it out themselves.

The hallmarks of the XXD line are all there in the 60D: larger, heavier build, and dual wheel controls, with second LCD and quick-access buttons.

The complaints are about the "removed" features that existed on the 50D, but are no longer there, and are now reserved for the 7D alone. This is what Canon got rid of, so it could lower the price on the XXD line by $200:
  • Autofocus micro-adjust
  • Some quick access button settings
  • Titanian-alloy body
  • 1 fps on the burst rate
  • joy-stick controller on back (for AF point selection, menu navigation).
  • PC flash sync port

There are also the CF vs. SD card changes, and the fact that you don't have to rebuy your cable release because a minijack connector is used instead of the proprietary N3 connector.

However, everybody forgets to also tell you what did get added over the 50D (which the 60D shares with the 7D):
  • HD video capability
  • twist-out LCD (which goes good with the HD video capability)
  • LCD overlay in the viewfinder (i.e., optional grid lines, electronic level display, etc.)
  • Electronic level
  • Remote flash master in the pop-up
  • Has infrared receiver for IR remotes (RC-1, RC-5, etc.)

And the 60D has one feature the 7D doesn't have: interchangeable focus screens. I know that I'm weird, but that was, hand-on-heart, the #1 reason I got a 50D, because I use adapted manual focus lenses a lot and I wanted a split-circle Katzeye focus screen badly. When the 7D didn't have them, the screams on the Fred Miranda alt. gear board were earsplitting, because we all knew there was no technical reason for it: the LCD overlay is embedded in the AF point screen, not the focus screen.

When I got my 5D2, the first three things I bought for it were a second battery, a decent camera strap, and an Eg-S focus screen, because focusing a manual focus 50mm f/1.2 lens while wide open without one is a serious serious PITA.
