Any thoughts on the new Canon G12? I want to purchase a smaller camera that I can just throw in my pocket but still have the ability to go fully manual to allow experimentation? I don't want to lug around a large DSLR, extra lens and flash and whatever else I may have in my camera bag. From what I have read so far this camera seems to offer what I am looking for and is highly recommended. Please reply with your thoughts and comments.

G12 if you want to do Strobist work and need the flip-out screen, and your definition of pocketable includes jacket pockets, not pants pockets.
S95 if you really want to travel light. The S95 goes to f/2 on the wide end, the G12 only goes to f/2.8. Same sensor; same processor; same image quality and high iso noise performance. Both cameras shoot RAW and have full manual modes.

I just bought a Canon G12 and so far I love it. The zooming in on the video can be a bit tricky but other then that, i really like it. I was going to go with the S95, but i think the G12 offers a little more professionalism to it (like what inkista said, as i can use external flashes on it). It's a little bigger and it can fit in your pants pocket but will be bulky a little and is better suited for a small purse or jacket pocket.
One a side note: I can't get the RAW photos of the Canon G12 to load in Adobe Lightroom3 for some reason. I started a new thread to ask about it so if anyone has suggestions let me know there please!

nice! I like it too
Anyway I think the lens ring control avoids the possibility to have the lens adapter and any converter (I really love my LA for the filters I can put it on). Maybe better a second dial near the zoom control.

I've had good experience with the Canon G12 Digital Camera
The lcd of these camera is fantastic, allows to take pictures or movie shoots in practical any position and situation. The ergonomic of the wheels for ISO,compensation and the mode selector are very well located, they work firmly. The new front wheel, that works for increase or decrease the aperture or shutter speed is great. Build quality is also as you would come to expect from a Canon high end compact camera. |

I've had my G12 for a couple weeks now and it's fantastic. I especially love the manual settings, and the ability to shoot in RAW.
I got it because I was looking for sort of a "mini SLR" but without the interchangable lenses, for just carrying around with me.

I have a G10. It is a great light weight camera to carry around on vacation and still take nice looking pictures. The G12 with the swivel screen is even better!
I found it a great camera to get started with manual configuration as the controls are easy to use (without having to go through long menus). Highly recommended. Nic.

As your only camera? G11 or G12...I don't think the G12 really improves much over the G11 so if you can find a closeout or used G11 much cheaper than the 12 then go for it.
I use a G10, I would have rather gotten the better ISO lower MP of the 11/12. There are also many times where it's big enough to be cumbersome but I prefer actual controls over menu controls.

Can't afford a DSLR. Can't decide between the G12 and the S95. I've read all the reviews and held both cameras and still can't make up my mind. Do either of them let you zoom in video mode? HELP
