Around 300 mm objectif ?

Hello,

I am looking to buy a tele-objectif with good quality. So for me let's skip lenses with f>4. I would like to compare lenses with fixed focus and zoom-lenses in range about 200-400 mm. I am most interested in landscape and other non-moving captures, but a sportscar will also get my attention. ( OK i know, i dont change lenses in 0,3 sec ). I have a canon 50D body and only L-glass, and mostly, but not always, carry a tripod. A canon 300 mm ( wich one ?? ) looks interesting, but i want to hear your story... even if it does not cover my question all the way.
I mentioned a 70-300 lens in a former context on this forum, but was told that is was a paparazzi-lens...( is that a problem? ) ...Confused? .. I am sure that some photographers can follow me, and direct me in my choice.

if you want to do landscapes you should be looking at wide angles, not teles... wildlife, however, is better suited to telephoto lenses
